Highlights from City Manager’s Weekly Update: Storm Damage Assessment

Each week, the City of Coronado City Manager’s Office provides an update that includes information on programs, services and issues within the City, as well as news, project updates and follow-up information when applicable. Featured below are highlights from that update. The entire City Manager’s Weekly Update can be found on the City’s website.

Weather and SandbagsThe heavy storms that are hitting San Diego County are not over. More rain is expected this week and next. Be sure to check the City’s El Niño/Storm Center page on the Coronado website for information on flooding and ways you can be prepared before, during and after a storm. In Coronado, sandbags are available for residents in need, while supplies last, at four locations. (See map below). No contractors or construction sites please. The City provides sandbags as a courtesy to its residents. Several times this week, supplies were depleted during heavy storms and the City continues to work to keep the sites stocked.

County Storm Damage Assessment:   San Diego County is asking residents to complete a form that will assist the agency in collecting damage information and associated costs with the current storms. The information will help determine the estimated dollar amount of disaster damages within the County and be used to determine if enough disaster damages have occurred to qualify for disaster assistance. Completing the form does not guarantee a disaster declaration will be received nor does it guarantee those who complete it will be eligible or receive disaster assistance. This is an informational gathering document only at this point. If you have any questions regarding information being collected or this form, email [email protected]. Click this link to complete the form.

Medical Marijuana:   At its meeting Tuesday, January 5, the City Council introduced an ordinance that amends Title 36 of the Coronado Municipal Code by adding Chapter 36.20 “Medical Marijuana Prohibited Activities.” The amended ordinance adds a chapter that expressly prohibits the establishment and operation of marijuana cultivation, processing, delivery and dispensary activities that will be licensed by the Bureau of Medical Marijuana Regulation (BMMR), and also included language that clarifies that an exception is made for delivery by or to a qualified patient/caregiver for the personal use by a qualified patient. The Council requested the ordinance return to the City Council 30 days after the BMMR provides licensing rules so the Council can consider local regulations.

Navy Training:  The Navy will be conducting parachute jumps into the Silver Strand Training Complex South in the vicinity of the old elephant cage on Monday, January 11, throughThursday, January 14, from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. each day. Naval Base Coronado said it will post information to its Facebook page.

Cal Am Water ConstructionThe City has received a permit application from California American Water, which is proposing a relatively large utility construction project to replace 2,000 linear feet of aged water mains along Flora Avenue, R.H. Dana Place and Isabella Avenue. The majority of the construction, which is expected to begin next week, is to occur during the day although a portion of the work will impact Orange Avenue at its intersection with R.H. Dana Place and will be completed between the hours of 9 p.m. and 5 a.m. The City is coordinating with California American Water and its contractor, Southland Paving, to limit construction impacts associated with the project. However, the project will require significant traffic control and will, at times, eliminate on-street parking. Residents and businesses along the affected streets will receive a notification letter from California American Water. When the City receives more information on specific road closures and dates, it will provide the information to residents. For more information about the project, contact Mark Duchesne, Construction Inspector for California American Water, at (916) 342-9801.
