The Coronado High School Islanders Varsity baseball team advanced their record to 22-5 with a 6-2 win over Junipero Serra High School on Wednesday, May 4th. Josh Leaser had another outstanding start for the Islanders, pitching 6 complete innings giving up only 2 runs (1 of them unearned) and allowing only 3 walks and 5 hits. Leaser got the win, his 8th of the season. Zack Weller closed for the Islanders, pitching the 7th inning and getting the save, his 3rd.
On offense Dominic Irigoyen, Chris Cummins, and Greg Gonzalez were the standouts. Irigoyen went 3 for 4 scoring 2 runs, Cummins was 1 for 4 with 2 RBIs, and Gonzalez 1 for 3 with a run scored.
The game was close with the Islanders only scoring 2 runs in the first 6 innings. The Islanders led 2-0 until the bottom half of the 6th inning when Serra tied the game 2-2 on an error and two hits. With the game tied at 2 in the top half of the 7th, first baseman Greg Gonzalez lead off with a single, and then designated hitter Dominic Irigoyen singled to put runners at 1st and 2nd. Left fielder Clark Fahrenthold then laid down a sacrifice bunt to move the runners to 2nd and 3rd.
Shortstop Zack Weller was intentionally walked bringing third baseman Jack Harris to the plate. With bases loaded Harris executed a perfect squeeze play to score Gonzalez from 3rd and put the Islanders up 3-2.
That brought the pitcher Josh Leaser up, who singled to make it 4-2. Center fielder Chris Cummins then doubled home 2 more runs to put the Islanders up 6-2.
The Islanders play this Friday, May 6, at 3:30 against Lincoln (at Lincoln).
