CORONADO, CA (May 19, 2016) – City leaders, supporters and sponsors of Coronado’s Free Summer Shuttle and, new this year, the Silver Strand Shuttle will kick off the service at 8 a.m. on Friday, May 27, the first day of the program. The new Silver Strand Shuttle bus wrap will make its debut.

The community is invited to the event, which will be held in front of the fountain near the Community Center, 1845 Strand Way. Refreshments will be served. The popular program’s fourth season runs through September 26.

The City Council approved funding for another year of the shuttle service and this year added a new shuttle service to the Silver Strand and Coronado Cays to help get more residents and visitors out of their cars during Coronado’s busiest season. The program is jointly funded by the City and the Coronado Tourism Improvement District, which is once again providing the shuttle “wraps” that add a bit of whimsy and fun and exemplifies Coronado’s carefree beach vibe.

The Free Silver Strand Shuttle will originate from Loews Coronado Bay Resort, which is also a sponsor. Northbound stops will include Navy Housing, Naval Amphibious Base Coronado and Orange Avenue at Adella Avenue. There are three stops inside the Coronado Cays before the shuttle returns to Loews.

The Free Summer Shuttle will run even more frequently in the village area than last year at 15-minute intervals, meaning no riders should wait at an MTS bus stop longer than 15 minutes for the next bus. The new Free Silver Strand Summer Bus will run at 30-minute intervals. Both shuttles will run from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Sunday through Thursday, and one hour later on Friday and Saturday.

The Summer Shuttle is the Metropolitan Transit System’s highest performing route in terms of passengers carried per hour of operation. Bus stop signs will be installed and promotional material, including a bus schedule, will be made available to promote the free shuttle. The schedule is available to download on the City’s website.
